The American Presidents: From George Washington to Abraham Lincoln. By: Rev. Joseph Samuel Reeves

Book Review by: Calvin R. Johnson

There are many published books on the Presidents of the United States; however, none seems to easily capture and portray the essence of children, their environment, their families, their struggle, and pathway to the presidency as the one recently published by Epic Press in Ontario. The book bearing the title The American Presidents: From George Washington to Abraham Lincoln is authored by J. Samuel Reeves. Reeves takes a “no nonsense” approach to recap the life and times of the presidents, their natural and acquired qualities, coupled with their philosophical and practical approaches to public service and ultimately the presidency. Where applicable he explains the pitfalls or challenges and their subsequent abilities and efforts to surpass them; he deals with each president’s weaknesses and strength as they ascend to this high prestigious office. Although, the central theme of the book relates to the presidents, the author provides greater education to readers by enlightening them on the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Voting Electoral College, Political Parties, coupled with Republican or Representative Democracy, as established in America, as we know it today, and what it could be in the future.

The book is a crucial reading material. It is written in simple, English, and the information is rather direct and precise. Factually, this is one of the few books on Government that actually captures the reader’s attention, and upon completion, there is no doubt, a burning desire to look forward to reading another publication of similar nature. This publication is, in my view, a “masterpiece” reading material for college political science courses covering the presidency, as well as for high school students interested in understanding themselves, their country, their government, and how they can maximize their potential to excel even to the highest office in the land. I also recommend this book to anyone with the desire to understand the American political process and how presidents and “presidential products” are developed, and subsequently successful at achieving their goals.

The timing of the publication is very crucial, in that it is published at a time when the U.S. no doubt stands as the only “visible super power” on the globe, engaging in activities in the Middle East, Far East, and Africa. In fact, the author hails from the West African nation of Liberia, and holds graduate degrees from U.S. Universities, and has published several other books; however, this one stands out for its direct, and precise sharing of ideas of what actually makes America what it is. Hats off to J. Samuel Reeves for a job well done, and readers, it is now your turn to enjoy the book… Contact Rev. J.
